Adieu Binky, Adieu

Yeah, right.

Day 1 started off like any other typical morning in these parts with Brittain contentedly talking, singing, or hollering around her binky (pacifier). Mostly happy as a clam. Throughout the day she enjoys emptying every cupboard she can reach or climb to. Especially the Tupperware and canned good items. Occasionally she will put things into those same cupboards. A shoe, the now overdue library book, her binky. So I wasn't overly concerned when evening approached and there was no binky to be found. After searching several of her favorite hiding places to no avail and bedtime coming steadily nearer, however, I began to worry. It was Sunday after all so I didn't want to run to the store. Besides only a few weeks had passed since the last time we had to buy replacement binky's. Surely we could unearth one somewhere. But no.

Night 1 I resigned myself to the fact that baby (I use this term loosely as she is 19months old and a seasoned nursery goer) would have to go to sleep without her prized possession. We substituted with an extra doggie to snuggle and the routine went on as normal, a story while we rocked, followed by a couple of songs. Then I tucked her quietly into bed. She did not make a peep. Not one. I made my exit.

A while later I could hear her talking and playing quietly in the crib. Not too shabby I thought. (But I forgot to knock on wood.) And right after that little pat on the back is when the noises went from quiet/happy to loud/angry. And that continued. Until after 10. And because she is not an only child I, against my better judgement, got her out of bed. She finally passed out sometime after midnight. Only to be awakened again when the phone rang at 3:30 am. She then woke up every hour or so after that and in the saddest cry you've ever heard asked for "Binky?"

Day 2 I headed straight for the binky aisle at Walmart. Call me weak. I bought a two-pack that we ripped open right away and another one I stashed for a rainy day. We are not ready to give up the binky. Although she'll only get it for naps and bedtime (and "maybe when I'm on an important phone call and she's whining"- that was Avery's idea). I decided we should ease into it rather than go cold turkey.

Any tips you can share for weaning of a pacifier? For once I'm ready.

With Mason we cut off the tips and that helped. He even threw them away himself. Of course, with him, I was ready.

My little guy is 2 1/2, and I am not looking forward to getting rid of the binky. I've been holding out...I am not sure for what, but we still have binky every night, and every nap.

Oh, Dest! Follow your instincts! Each child is different. Madison was easy, Jacob was devastated that we cut his and I quickly had to replace it, and Brooklyn, well, yeah, she still has hers and she just turned 2! There is no "binky rule" just mommy instincts! Follow her vibes and she'll let you know. Even if you are pulling it out of her mouth as she walks into kindergarten! He-He! Love ya!

I just finished reading one binky success story, then hopped over to your blog. Here's what she did http://rycole.blogspot.com/2009/10/binkie-fairy.html. I cut Jack's down to get him off it, just a tiny each day. It went pretty smoothly. Sally hasn't taken one, it's been nice. Good luck!

Well, if you can do it easily...I hope it goes well. With Jakey I just had to go cold turkey, (b/c he was 3! ugh). Anyway, luckily I had the plan to tell him he had to give his passies to Aunt Mo-Mo, (since she was having twins--we only had 2 passies for Jakey). So he totally fell for it. And whenever he asked for them, I just kindly reminded him that the babies needed them. Oh, and we also let him pick a cheap toy from Target in place of "pappy." (He picked out some "Little Hearts" stuffed tiny chicken that was like 3 bucks). ;)

Forgot to say...
And with us telling him he had to give them to Aunt Mo-Mo's babies, I told him he wasn't a baby anymore...so he didn't need them. ;) Good Luck!

My kids always weaned the binky young, so I have no advice. Sorry.

Here's my question: Who was calling at 3:30 am???? I hope it was REALLY important and not a wrong number.

My sister-in-law cuts a small hole in the binky then it loses its appeal.
It has worked with all 3 of her kids.

Thanks for all the advice. I loved the link Jenny- for two reasons. 1-it's a great idea 2-It gives me time. Brittain does not seem old enough to reason with like that yet.
So we're keeping it for now.
And when we get there I'll definitely use the Binky Fairy idea and also cut a hole in the binky so she's not as in love with it before it does a disappearing act.

Andrea-it was a super important (branch) call. You should see how fast Ryan can go from a dead sleep in our room, to the far side of the living room when the phone rings at the time of day. Pretty amazing.

Oh I wish I had some magical, fail-proof remedy for you! -- Looks like you have a lot of great advice though for when you are ready! My kids never liked a binki, but I'm not sure I would prefer that 100% either! Good Luck!!!

P.S.--Yup, those were all mine! I accidentally posted my comment three, yes three times! Then I tried to delete the other two...forgot to refresh the screen, didn't think it deleted them and then, deleted them all! Sorry about the mess!

Give the girl her binky!!! J/K! I just wish I was having that problem a binky would have come in hand for the first 14 months of Ezra's life...HA HA HA! Anyway, all I know is when a girl know what she wants she'll get it(okay maybe it is just a baby thing...they do rule the roost!) Good luck!
